Sightseeing in Gandhinagar

Inaugurated in 1992 by the BAPS Swaminarayan movement, this Akshardham complex was built entirely in pink sandstone and Italian white marble without structural steel, its central shrine housing a 7-foot gold-leafed murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan flanked by exhibition halls on Indian culture and spirituality. It served as the model for the much larger Akshardham temple later built in Delhi. The complex’s evening Sahaj Anand Water Show combines light, sound and fountains around a mythological narrative, and its manicured gardens make it one of Gandhinagar’s most-visited sites. Akshardham Temple sits at an elevation of 82 m and is typically explored in about 2-3 hours. The most favourable months to visit are January, December, November, and February, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Other notable highlights include pink sandstone and marble main temple facade, gold-leafed central murti of Swaminarayan, and evening musical fountain and light show. It falls within Gujarat.

Spread over roughly 400 hectares along the Sabarmati, Indroda Nature Park combines a zoo, botanical garden and crocodile breeding centre with a dedicated Dinosaur and Fossil Park and natural history museum, displaying skeletal casts and fossil evidence connected to central Gujarat’s Narmada valley, one of the richest dinosaur fossil and egg-hatchery sites in the world. The park’s exhibits trace prehistoric life alongside Gujarat’s living wildlife, making it a popular stop for school groups. Walking trails wind through mixed forest cover maintained as a green buffer within Gandhinagar’s planned city layout. Indroda Nature Park sits at an elevation of 73 m and is typically explored in about 2-3 hours. Other notable highlights include life-size dinosaur replicas along fossil trail, two-horned Indian rhinoceros in spacious enclosure, and crocodile feeding session at reptile pond.

Mahatma Mandir is a convention and exhibition centre located at sector 13 C in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. It is inspired by the life and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. It is one of the biggest convention centres in India, spread over an area of 34 acres (14 ha; 0.053 sq mi). It was developed by the Government of Gujarat. Business summits like Vibrant Gujarat Global Investor Summit 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019 were organised here.

Swaminarayan Mandir Vasna Sanstha (SMVS) is a Hindu denomination within the Swaminarayan Sampradaya. It was founded in 1987 by Devnandandasji Swami, usually addressed as HDH Bapji by his devotees and followers, It propagates the preaching and teaching of Swaminarayan as explained by Jivanpran Abajibapashri. Multifaceted activities in areas like social, cultural, educational, religious fields are carried out by SMVS under the directions and guidance of Bapji and his second in-command and current Guru Satyasankalpdasji Swami, who is usually addressed as HDH Swamishri. From a modest beginning in 1987, SMVS has developed into a multifaceted institution.

On 24 September 2002, multiple terrorists attacked the Swaminarayam Akshardham Temple in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India, killing 33 and injuring more than 80. India's National Security Guard intervened and ended the siege the next day, killing the terrorists. Six people were later arrested by Gujarat Police but acquitted in 2014 by the Supreme Court. In response to the attack, Pramukh Swami Maharaj, along with government officials, appealed to maintain peace. The complex re-opened on 7 October 2002, 14 days following the attack.

The step-well of Ambapur is a stepwell in the village of Ambapur, close to the state capital, Gandhinagar. The stepwell is believed to be built in the 15th century although it doesn't have any inscription. The step-well or 'Vav', as it is called in Gujarati, is intricately carved and is five stories in depth. Such step wells were once integral to the semi-arid regions of Gujarat as they provided basic water needs for drinking, washing and bathing. These wells were also venues for festivals and sacred rituals.

Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, also called GIFT City, is India's first International Financial Services Centre and a greenfield smart city on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Gujarat's Gandhinagar district. In 2020, GIFT IFSC ranked 10th in the Global Financial Centres Index. In 2025, it was ranked 40th in fintech and 46th overall in the Global Financial Centres Index, which included 119 financial centres. GIFT City is around 12 km (7.5 mi) from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

A nature park having a dinosaur fossil park, a botanical garden, a deer park, a blue whale skeleton on display, a cactus garden, a bird cage and places for family picnic.

In sector 9 and along the river front is the lovely Sarita Udyan, a great spot for picnickers. The entire area is being developed to provide full recreational facilities.

An attraction for children and tourists, the Children's Park in Sector 28 has a mini train and a lake with boating facilities.
