Overview

Gokarna, an ancient Hindu pilgrimage town on Karnataka's coast, is revered as one of the region's seven sacred 'Mukti Sthala' sites, centered on the Mahabaleshwar Temple, which enshrines the Atmalinga—a Shiva lingam legend says was set down by Ravana and fixed into the earth here. The town's name, meaning 'cow's ear,' reflects local lore about the land's shape, and its main beach sits beside the temple, while a scenic coastal trail or boat ride leads to quieter coves like Kudle, Om, Half Moon, and Paradise beaches. Since the 1990s, Gokarna has also drawn backpackers seeking a less commercialized retreat, yet it remains a living pilgrimage town where spiritual devotion and coastal tranquility coexist.
