Transport Options

✈️

By Air

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, about 239km from Kedarnath. From there, you can take a taxi or bus to reach the trek base or use helicopter services that operate during the yatra season.

Jolly Grant Airport (DED)

The only airport in the region with regular flights from Delhi and other major cities. After landing, you need to cover the remaining distance by road.

  • •Flights from Delhi take about 1 hour; from other cities, connections may be via Delhi.
  • •Prepaid taxis and state transport buses are available from the airport to Rishikesh, Haridwar, and further to Gaurikund.
  • •The drive from the airport to Gaurikund is roughly 220-240km and takes 8-10 hours depending on road conditions.
  • •Helicopter services from Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi operate during the yatra season (May-June and Sep-Oct), with flights to the Kedarnath helipad near the temple.

Helicopter Shuttle

A popular and time-saving option for those who want to avoid the strenuous trek. Several operators offer shared and private charters from various points.

  • •Helicopter services operate from Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi; flights take about 10-15 minutes to reach Kedarnath.
  • •Book well in advance as seats are limited and demand is high during peak season.
  • •Fares vary by operator and season; shared charters are more economical than private ones.
  • •Helicopter operations are weather-dependent; flights may be cancelled or delayed due to cloud cover or wind.
🚆

By Train

The nearest major railway stations are Rishikesh and Haridwar, both well-connected to Delhi and other cities. From the station, you continue by road to Gaurikund or Sonprayag.

Rishikesh Railway Station (RKSH)

The closest railhead to Kedarnath, about 200km away. Many pilgrims prefer this station as it's on the main line.

  • •Several trains from Delhi (e.g., Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi) run daily to Rishikesh; travel time is about 5-6 hours.
  • •From Rishikesh, state buses and private taxis go to Gaurikund (approx. 200km, 7-8 hours).
  • •You can also hire a taxi directly to Sonprayag, the last road head before the trek.
  • •Rishikesh has many hotels and guesthouses for an overnight stay before continuing.

Haridwar Railway Station (HW)

A major junction with excellent connectivity from all over India. Slightly farther than Rishikesh but with more train options.

  • •Frequent trains from Delhi (e.g., Shatabdi, AC Express) arrive in Haridwar in about 4-5 hours.
  • •From Haridwar, buses and taxis are available to Gaurikund (approx. 220km, 8-9 hours).
  • •Many yatra packages include road transport from Haridwar to Gaurikund and back.
  • •Haridwar is also the starting point for the Char Dham Yatra road journey.
