Places

Sun Temple

Commissioned around 1026-27 CE by the Solanki king Bhima I, the Modhera Sun Temple was built with such precise astronomical alignment that sunlight strikes the sanctum directly on the equinoxes. Its original idol of Surya was lost to historical raids and the temple has not functioned as an active place of worship for centuries, but its carved pillars, torana gateway and sculpted exterior survive as one of India’s finest examples of Solanki-era temple architecture, and the complex now hosts the annual Modhera Dance Festival each January. Sun Temple sits at an elevation of 15 m and is typically explored in about 1-2 hours. The best time to visit is October to March. Other notable highlights include equinox sunrise rays hitting the sanctum idol, intricate carved stone chariot with seven horses, and surya Kund stepped tank for ritual bathing. It falls within Mehsana district and Gujarat.

Heritage

Modhera Museum

Run by the Archaeological Survey of India, the Modhera Museum sits a short walk from the Sun Temple and Surya Kund, housing sculpture fragments, architectural pieces and other artefacts recovered during excavation and conservation of the site. Its collection offers context on the temple’s Solanki-era craftsmanship that is harder to appreciate from the weathered stonework of the monument itself, making it a useful, brief add-on to a visit to the main complex. Modhera Museum is typically explored in about 30-60 minutes. The best time to visit is October to March. Other notable highlights include surya idol carved in black stone, sculpted panels from temple outer walls, and broken amalaka and kalasha finial pieces. It falls within Mehsana district and Gujarat.

Surya Kund

Also known as Rama Kund, the Surya Kund is a large rectangular stepwell-style tank built directly in front of the Modhera Sun Temple, its terraced sides descending in geometric tiers punctuated by over a hundred miniature shrines dedicated to various deities. Built in the same 11th-century phase as the temple itself, it ranks among the best-preserved ceremonial tanks of the Solanki period and was designed for ritual bathing before worship at the temple beyond. Surya Kund sits at an elevation of 58 m and is typically explored in about 30-60 minutes. The most favourable months to visit are January, December, November, and February, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Other notable highlights include hundred-plus carved shrines lining the terraced steps, descending stairways to the sacred, still water, and view of Sun Temple’s shikhara reflected in the tank. It falls within Mehsana district and Gujarat, India.
