Rani ki Vav

Commissioned around 1063 by Queen Udayamati of the Solanki dynasty as a memorial to her husband King Bhima I, Rani ki Vav descends seven storeys underground, its galleries lined with more than 1,500 sculptural panels depicting Vishnu’s avatars, apsaras and mythological scenes. Buried by Saraswati river floods for centuries and rediscovered only in the 1980s, its remarkable preservation earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 2014, and its image now appears on the reverse of the Indian ₹100 note. Rani ki Vav sits at an elevation of 79 m. The most favourable months to visit are January, December, November, and February, when conditions are best suited for sightseeing. Other notable highlights include descend seven levels of carved pillars, spot Vishnu reclining on Shesha panel, and count over 500 principal sculptures. It falls within Patan, Patan district, and Gujarat.

Heritage

Sahastralinga Talav

Built under Solanki king Siddharaja Jayasinha in the 12th century, Sahastralinga Talav (literally "the tank of a thousand lingams") was engineered with channels and sluices drawing water from the Saraswati river into a stepped reservoir ringed by shrines to Shiva. Much of the structure was lost over the centuries, but ongoing archaeological excavation has uncovered stone steps, kunds and temple foundations that hint at the scale of Solanki-era hydraulic engineering, complementing the nearby Rani ki Vav as evidence of Patan’s importance as a medieval capital. Sahastralinga Talav is typically explored in about 30-60 minutes. The best time to visit is October to March. Other notable highlights include carved stone steps of the ancient tank, broken Shiva lingams scattered among ruins, and inscribed pillars from the 11th century. It falls within Gujarat, India.
