Places
Dumas Beach
Dumas Beach’s sand takes on a distinctive dark grey colour from volcanic and mineral deposits, setting it apart from the paler beaches more typical of Gujarat’s coast. Its proximity to an old cremation ground has fed decades of local ghost stories, which if anything have only added to its popularity, particularly after dark when rows of stalls open selling bhutta, chaat and other street food along the shore. It remains Surat’s most popular quick beach getaway, roughly half an hour from the city centre. The best time to visit is October to March. Other notable highlights include evening chai and bhajiya at beach stalls, walking on dark silvery-grey volcanic sand, and sunset view over the Arabian Sea.
Andrew Library
In 1850, a wealthy pearl merchant, Naginchand Jhaveri, donated funds for the construction of this library and named it after the British collector Andrews for his help. Its associated hall was used for stage shows and gatherings but later converted into part of the library. Inside are 18,000 books including a large number of Gujarati and Hindi novels as well as reference books on erstwhile princely states. It is associated with the Nanpura Parsi library too. Andrews Library is the oldest library in Surat, Gujarat, India, established in 1850.
Surat castle
This historical castle, which was planned and built between 1540 and 1546 by Khudawand Khan on the banks of the River Tapi, is one of the chief ancient monuments of Surat. The magnificent gateway is a massive structure with strong door shutters furnished with protruding spikes at the exterior facade, and there is a decorative architectural treatment at the interior facade. Surat Castle, or Surat Fort, is a 16th-century structure in the city of Surat. The Ahmedabad king Sultan Mahmood-III (1538–1554) ordered its construction to defend the city from the frequent attacks that had devastated it.
Gopi Talav
Lake is renovated and now has very good garden, restaurant and boating facility available. Gopi Talav or Gopi Lake is a lake in the Gopipura locality in the city of Surat in Gujarat state of India. It was built circa 1510 CE by Malik Gopi, who was an affluent merchant and governor of Surat during the Gujarat Sultanate. In 2012, the lake was renovated by Surat Municipal Corporation and the area surrounding was redeveloped as a recreational facility.
