About Alangudi Abathsagayeswarar Temple

Alangudi, in Valangaiman taluk, is the Navagraha shrine of Guru (Jupiter), about 17 km south of Kumbakonam on the Mannargudi road and 7 km north of Needamangalam station, near the Vettar, a branch of the Cauvery. It is the 98th of the 127 Thevaram shrines south of the Cauvery: Sambandar sang of it as “beautiful Irumpoolai”, and Appar included it in his hymn to Thiruveezhimizhalai.

Shiva is Abathsagayeswarar, the helper in danger, because he swallowed the deadly halahala poison from the churning of the ocean to save the gods. The goddess was born here as Elavarkuzhali, did penance and married him at nearby Thirumanamangalam. The temple is a parivara shrine of Thiruvidaimarudur, fourth of the Pancha Aranya sthalams, and is said to have been built by Amuthokar, a minister of the king Musukunda.
