About Avinashi Lingeswarar Temple

Avinashi means "that which cannot be destroyed", and the old name Thiruppukkoliyur recalls how the gods took refuge here at the end of an age. The lingam is self-manifest, said to have emerged here in the Kongu country south of the Kanchimanadhi as a root from Kasi, with the Ganga rising beside it as a well. Parvati did penance for a thousand years in the forest of padhiri trees and won the right half of the Lord as Karunambigai.

The best-known story is a miracle of the saint Sundarar. Two boys bathed in the temple tank, and a crocodile swallowed one. Three years later, as the other boy’s sacred-thread ceremony was being celebrated, Sundarar came to Avinashi, heard the grieving mother and sang a Thevaram hymn by the tank — and the crocodile gave the boy back, grown by three years. The Mudalai Vai Pillai festival on Panguni Uthiram marks the miracle, and a shrine to Sundarar stands on the tank’s bank.
