About Padavedu Renugambal Temple

Padavedu Renugambal Temple, in Polur taluk of Tiruvannamalai district, honours Renuka Devi — in the temple’s story, the goddess Uma born as Renukai, daughter of King Raivatha of Vidarbha, who married the sage Jamadagni and became the mother of Parasurama.

One day, fetching water from the river for her husband’s worship, she saw the reflection of a passing gandharva and was distracted. Jamadagni, doubting her, ordered his son to strike off her head; Parasurama obeyed and then won her back to life. Since then, the temple says, the mother has sat at Padavedu with her head as the chief form of worship, blessing all who come.
