About Ramaswamy Temple Kumbakonam
Ramaswamy Temple in Kumbakonam was built about 400 years ago under Raghunatha Nayak, who ruled Thanjavur from 1614 to 1640 and was a devoted follower of Rama. His minister Govinda Dikshitar — also remembered for Ayyan Street in Kumbakonam, the Ayyan tank in Thanjavur and the town of Ayyampettai — was behind its construction. Because Rama is enshrined in his coronation form, the temple is called the Ayodhya of the South.
Rama and Sita sit together on a single pedestal, with Rama’s brothers in attendance — a grouping the temple says is seen nowhere else. Hanuman, too, is unusual here: seated, with a veena in one hand and the Ramayana in the other. In Kumbakonam, the temple notes, Vishnu appears in three forms: Sarangapani, Chakrapani and Kodandapani, the Rama of this shrine.
