About Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple

Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple, near Kanyakumari, is sacred to both Shaivites and Vaishnavites. The name holds all three gods: Sthanu for Shiva, Mal for Vishnu and Ayan for Brahma. In a single lingam the base is honoured as Brahma, the middle as Vishnu and the top as Shiva — a form the temple describes as found nowhere else. Though now in Tamil Nadu, it counts among the 108 Shiva temples of the Kerala tradition, having come over from Travancore with the district.

Four legends belong to the temple: the sage Atri and his wife Anasuya, Indra freed of his curse here, the goddess Aram Valartha Nayaki, and Thanumalayan’s wedding to the Kanyakumari goddess, which the gods stopped so she could stay a maiden and slay the demon Banasura. The 18-foot Anjaneyar, buried by townsfolk to save it from the Arcot Nawab’s raiders and only reinstalled on 2 May 1930, is a favourite for butter offerings.
