About Tiruchengode Ardhanareeswarar Temple
Tiruchengode Ardhanareeswarar Temple stands on a red hill about 650 feet above the plain, reached by some 1,200 steps. Called Thirukodimada Sengundrur in old texts and simply “Sengodu” by Ilango Adigal in the Silappathikaram, it is one of the seven Kongu shrines sung by Thirugnana Sambandar. What makes it unique is the main image: Shiva and Parvati fused into one figure as Ammaiyappar, the father-mother — a form the temple says is found at no other shrine.
There are three great shrines — Ardhanareeswarar, the goddess Bhagampriyal and Murugan as Sengottu Velavar. Legend says the hill is a fragment of Mount Meru, broken off in a contest of strength between Adisesha and Vayu, and that it looks male from one side and female from the other. Sambandar is said to have cured a fever here, and the temple keeps the Deva theertham and an illupai tree as its sthala tree.
