About Vallimalai Murugan Temple
Vallimalai Murugan Temple is honoured as the birthplace of Valli, Murugan’s consort. In the temple’s story, two sisters, Amudhavalli and Sundaravalli, prayed to marry Murugan. Sundaravalli was reborn on this hill and found as a baby in a pit among valli creepers by Nambirajan, king of the hunter clan, who raised her as his daughter. As a girl she guarded the millet fields from a raised stone platform, singing to drive away the birds.
Murugan came to Vallimalai to win her, testing her in turn as a hunter, an old man, a vengai tree and a sage. When the hunters fought him and fell senseless, Valli declared she would marry no one but Murugan; he revived them and married her. The temple keeps a Saravana Poigai tank and a rajagopuram over the Arumugar shrine.
