Banashankari Temple
The Banashankari Temple, located about 6 km from Badami, is an ancient shrine dedicated to Goddess Banashankari, a form of Parvati. The temple is built in the Dravidian style, with a gopura (tower) and a large temple tank, and it dates back to the Chalukya period, though it has been renovated over the centuries. It is a significant pilgrimage site, especially during the Banashankari fair held in January-February, and offers a peaceful spiritual experience away from the main tourist circuit.
Badami Cave Temples
Four rock-cut cave temples carved into a sandstone cliff, dating from the 6th to 8th centuries CE under the early Chalukyas. Cave 1 is dedicated to Shiva, Caves 2 and 3 to Vishnu (with Cave 3, inscribed to 578 CE, being the largest and most ornate), and Cave 4 to Jain tirthankaras, making it a rare site with both Hindu and Jain cave architecture together.
Mahakuta Temples
Early Chalukya temples round a spring-fed tank.
Virupaksha Temple, Pattadakal
The great 8th-century temple of Pattadakal.
