To Chidambaram: the temple of Nataraja
Our driver picks you up from your hotel or home in Salem in the morning. Drive from Salem to Chidambaram (about 182 km, 3 hrs 30 min). Check in at your hotel in Chidambaram. Arrive in Chidambaram and spend the evening in the Thillai Nataraja temple, where Shiva is worshipped as the cosmic dancer in the gold-roofed Chit Sabha. Here he is also the element of space, and the priests draw back a curtain to show the "Chidambara Rahasyam", an empty space hung with golden leaves. Stay for the night puja. Pichavaram mangroves and Thillai Kali
Take a rowing boat early through the channels of the Pichavaram mangrove forest, one of the largest in the country, where the roots arch over the water. Back in town, visit the Thillai Kali Amman temple, then head home. Drive from Chidambaram to Pichavaram (about 15 km, 15 min) and from Pichavaram to Salem (about 191 km, 3 hrs 45 min), and drop at your hotel, home or the railway station in Salem. The tour ends here.
