Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Vijayawada to Dwarka

Reach Dwarka by train from Vijayawada, where our driver meets you. Check in at your hotel in Dwarka. Freshen up and rest after the drive, then walk to the Dwarkadhish Temple in the late afternoon, when the queues are shorter. Mobile phones, cameras and bags are not allowed inside, so leave them at the hotel or the counter near the gate. Go down the 56 steps of the Swarg Dwar to Gomti Ghat and watch the sun set over the sea, then come back up for the evening aarti and the lit-up temple. Dinner at a local Gujarati thali restaurant (at your own cost). Overnight stay in Dwarka.

  1. 1

    Dwarkadhish Temple

The five-storey Jagat Mandir of Lord Krishna, one of the Char Dham, built of carved sandstone on 72 pillars. Its tall flag is changed several times a day by the temple priests, and a darshan with the evening aarti is the highlight of the visit. Allow about two hours with the queue.

  2. 2

    Gomti Ghat

The bathing ghat where the Gomti river meets the Arabian Sea, at the foot of the 56 steps behind the temple. Pilgrims take a dip here before darshan, and small shrines line the ghat. It is at its best at sunset.

Day 2

Nageshwar, Bet Dwarka and Rukmini Temple

Start early, around 7:30 am, to reach Nageshwar before the crowd. From there the road runs north towards Okha and crosses the Sudarshan Setu, the cable-stayed bridge to Bet Dwarka, so there is no longer any need for the ferry. After lunch, stop at Gopi Talav on the way back and end the day at the Rukmini Devi Temple on the edge of Dwarka. Carry water and a cap; the coast is hot and open for most of the year. The evening is free for the Dwarkadhish aarti again or for shopping for Dwarka shells and bandhani. Overnight stay in Dwarka.

  1. 1

    Nageshwar Jyotirlinga

One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, about 17 km from Dwarka. A huge seated statue of Lord Shiva stands in the garden at the entrance, and the lingam is in an underground sanctum. Allow about an hour.

  2. 2

    Bet Dwarka

The island in the Gulf of Kutch believed to be Lord Krishna's home. The Dwarkadhish temple here is said to hold the idol from Krishna's own palace, and the island also has a temple of Hanuman with his son Makardhwaj. Plan two to three hours.

  3. 3

    Gopi Talav

The small pond linked to Krishna and the gopis of Vrindavan, known for the yellow clay (gopi chandan) used for tilak. A quick stop of about 20 minutes.

  4. 4

    Rukmini Devi Temple

The 12th-century temple of Krishna's consort, about 2 km outside Dwarka, with fine carvings of elephants and dancers on its outer walls. Local priests tell the story of why it stands apart from the main temple.

Day 3

Dwarka to Somnath via Porbandar

Today's travel: from Dwarka to Porbandar (about 104 km, 2 hrs) and from Porbandar to Somnath (about 131 km, 2 hrs 30 min). Leave Dwarka after an early breakfast and drive down the coast road, with the sea on your right for much of the way. Stop in Porbandar for Kirti Mandir, the house where Mahatma Gandhi was born, and the Sudama Temple close by, then have lunch in town. Reach Somnath by mid-afternoon and check in. Visit the Somnath Temple in the evening; phones are not allowed inside here either. Stay on for the 7 pm aarti and then the light and sound show on the temple grounds. Overnight stay in Somnath.

  1. 1

    Kirti Mandir, Porbandar

The three-storey ancestral house where Mahatma Gandhi was born in 1869, now a memorial with photographs and the room where he was born. Allow about 45 minutes.

  2. 2

    Sudama Temple, Porbandar

A temple of Krishna's childhood friend Sudama, with a small maze of paths in the garden that visitors walk through.

  3. 3

    Somnath Temple

The first of the twelve Jyotirlingas, standing right on the shore of the Arabian Sea. Destroyed and rebuilt many times through history, the present temple was completed in 1951 in the Chalukya style. The evening aarti, with the sea behind the temple, is unforgettable.

  4. 4

    Light and Sound Show

An evening show on the temple grounds, after the aarti, that tells the story of Somnath against the temple walls. It runs for about an hour (tickets at the counter).

Day 4

Somnath to Vijayawada

If you like, go back to the Somnath Temple for the 7 am aarti before breakfast. Then visit the sacred spots around town connected with the last days of Lord Krishna: Bhalka Tirth, where he is believed to have been struck by a hunter's arrow, and the Triveni Sangam a short way off. Have lunch before starting the drive home. Drive from Somnath to Veraval (about 7 km, 15 min). Board the train from Veraval back to Vijayawada (about 1,729 km), and the tour ends.

  1. 1

    Bhalka Tirth

The place, about 5 km from Somnath, where Lord Krishna is believed to have been struck by an arrow while resting under a tree. A temple marks the spot.

  2. 2

    Triveni Sangam

The meeting point of the Hiran, Kapila and the mythical Saraswati rivers, where pilgrims take a holy dip. The Gita Mandir and the Laxminarayan Temple are close by.
