Visit the Mahabaleshwar temple and walk down the car street to the main beach, then over the headland to Kudle beach for the sunset. Overnight stay in Gokarna.

  1. 1

    Mahabaleshwar Temple

The ancient Shiva temple of Gokarna, said to hold the Atmalinga that Ravana set down here; men enter bare-chested in a dhoti.

The temple town's own beach, where pilgrims bathe before darshan.

  3. 3

The beach trail and New Year's Eve

Walk the cliff path from Kudle to Om, Half Moon and Paradise beaches (about two hours with stops) and come back by boat if the sea is calm. Rest in the afternoon, then head to the beach for New Year's Eve: dinner, music and a bonfire at one of the cafés as the year turns. Overnight stay in Gokarna.

    Paradise Beach

The last and wildest of the Gokarna beaches, at the end of the cliff trail.

Tour Overview

Gokarna is a temple town on the Karwar coast with a chain of beaches south of it, linked by a cliff path: Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise. For New Year it offers a softer celebration than Goa, with bonfires and music at the beach cafés and the first sunrise of the year over the Western Ghats.
