Top Attractions
Virupaksha Temple
This ancient Shiva temple, also known as the Pampapathi Temple, has been a living place of worship since well before the Vijayanagara Empire was founded. Its nine-tiered eastern gopuram rises about 50 meters and is a landmark of Hampi, with the sanctum housing a linga of Virupaksha. The temple remains active, with daily rituals and festivals, making it a spiritual heart of the ruins.
Hemakuta Hill
Hemakuta Hill is a rocky plateau dotted with dozens of small temples, shrines, and monolithic sculptures, many predating the Vijayanagara Empire. It offers panoramic views over the Virupaksha Temple, Hampi Bazaar, and the Tungabhadra River, making it a popular spot for sunset. The hill also contains the famous Sasivekalu Ganesha and Kadalekalu Ganesha statues, carved from single boulders.
Hampi Utsav stages
Evening concerts and dance performances on stages among the ruins.
Vittala Temple
The stone chariot and the musical pillars of Hampi.
Royal Enclosure
The Mahanavami platform and the Stepped Tank.
Elephant Stables
This long, low building with a row of eleven domed chambers once housed the royal elephants of the Vijayanagara kings. The central chamber is taller and more ornate, possibly used for ceremonial elephants, while the others have arched entrances. Its Indo-Islamic architectural style reflects the cosmopolitan nature of the empire's capital.
Anegundi
A quiet village across the river, older than Hampi itself.
Anjanadri Hill
A hill temple of Hanuman, reached by 575 whitewashed steps.
