Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

The double-decker root bridge

Our driver picks you up from your hotel or home in Shillong in the morning. Drive from Shillong to Tyrna (about 58 km, 1 hr 15 min) and from Tyrna to Sohra (Cherrapunji) (about 5 km, 15 min). Check in at your hotel in Sohra (Cherrapunji). Start early from the road end at Tyrna and walk down about 3,500 steps through the forest, across two wire suspension bridges over clear blue rivers, to the village of Nongriat. Here the Khasi people have trained the roots of rubber fig trees across a stream over generations to make the double-decker living root bridge. Rest by the natural pools below it, walk on to Rainbow Falls if you have the energy (about an hour and a half more each way), and climb back to Tyrna by late afternoon; the round trip takes five to eight hours on foot. Overnight stay in Sohra (Cherrapunji).

  1. 1

    Tyrna–Nongriat steps

A steep stepped trail of about 3,500 steps through the forest.

  2. 2

Day 2

Sohra caves and falls, and back

Rest your legs with an easy morning at the Mawsmai cave and the Seven Sisters falls, then drive back to Shillong. Drive from Sohra (Cherrapunji) to Shillong (about 53 km, 1 hr), and drop at your hotel, home or the railway station in Shillong. The tour ends here.

    Mawsmai Cave

A lit limestone cave near Sohra.
