Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Reservoirs and Waterfalls of Chinnakanal

After pickup from your Rajakkad hotel, the day visits waterfalls and a dam and ends at a mountain lake, with a lunch break between stops. You return to Rajakkad for the night.

  1. 1

    Pallivasal Waterfalls

Pallivasal is home to Kerala's first hydroelectric project, commissioned in 1940, near Chithirapuram. A waterfall drops near the power station in a series of cascades against a green hillside. Visitors combine the falls with a look at this piece of early industrial heritage.

  2. 2

    Power House Waterfalls

Power House Waterfalls is a tall cascade on the hillside at Chinnakanal, near the hydroelectric power house that gives it its name. The water tumbles over rocks beside the road and is strongest in the monsoon. It is one of the most easily seen waterfalls on the Munnar hill road.

  3. 3

    Anayirankal Dam

Anayirankal Dam holds a reservoir surrounded by some of the largest tea estates in Munnar. The water is calm and green, and boat rides are available on the lake. The quiet road to the dam passes plantation land and forest with little traffic.

  4. 4

    Sita Devi Lake

Sita Devi Lake is a small mountain lake near Devikulam, with clear water said to be rich in minerals. According to a local legend, Sita of the Ramayana once bathed here, and the lake takes its name from that story. The lake is surrounded by trees and hills, and visitors can walk along its edge.

Day 2

Eravikulam and High Viewpoints

After breakfast at the hotel, the day visits the national park, two waterfalls and a viewpoint.

  1. 1

    Eravikulam National Park

Eravikulam National Park is a wildlife sanctuary in Idukki district, famous for its population of the Nilgiri tahr, an endangered mountain goat. Visitors can take a bus ride into the park and walk along designated paths to spot the tahrs and enjoy the views of the rolling grasslands. The park also contains Anamudi, the highest peak in South India, though climbing it is not permitted.

  2. 2

    Nyayamakad Waterfalls

Nyayamakad Waterfalls is a rocky waterfall on the road to Rajamala, with tea slopes rising behind it. The water runs down in layers over dark rock and is at its fullest in the monsoon. It is a short, easy stop on the way to Eravikulam National Park.

  3. 3

    Attukad Waterfalls

Attukad Waterfalls is a scenic cascade near Munnar, set among rocks and lush greenery. Visitors can walk down to viewpoints to watch the water tumble down, especially after the monsoon. The surrounding area offers a peaceful spot for photography and nature walks.

  4. 4

    Lockhart Gap

Lockhart Gap is a scenic viewpoint on the mountain road above Munnar, looking out over layered ridges and deep valleys. Clouds often roll through the gap, and the road itself offers some of the best views in the area. It is a short stop for photographs and fresh mountain air.
