Badami, the ancient Chalukya capital of Vatapi, offers a remarkable glimpse into early Deccan architecture through its four rock-cut cave temples carved into a sandstone cliff, dating from the 6th to 8th centuries CE. The best time to visit is from October to March, when the weather is pleasant for exploring the caves, the fort, and the temples around Agastya Lake. A stay of one to two days is sufficient to cover the main sites, but planning at least two days allows a relaxed pace. Badami is ideally paired with the nearby Chalukyan heritage sites of Aihole (about 35 km away) and Pattadakal (about 22 km away), forming a classic triangle that can be explored over a three-day itinerary.

Auto-rickshaws and Taxis

Shared auto-rickshaws or private taxis are common; buses also run but less frequently.

Entry Fees and Hours

ASI charges a combined ticket for the caves and fort; open from sunrise to sunset.

•Carry cash, as card payments may not be accepted at ticket counters.
