Overview

•The Chota Char Dham Yatra is a pilgrimage circuit in the Indian Himalayas that includes Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.
•Badrinath, dedicated to Vishnu as Badrinarayan, is one of the four Char Dhams (with Dwarka, Puri, and Rameshwaram) and one of the four Chota Char Dhams.
•Situated at 3,133m on the banks of the Alaknanda River, flanked by the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, with the Neelkanth Peak visible behind the temple, it is the only site in the circuit directly reachable by road.
•The temple tradition holds that Adi Shankaracharya established it in the 8th–9th century, recovering the black stone Vishnu idol (Shaligram) from the Alaknanda.
•The yatra typically combines these four sacred sites, with Badrinath often the final destination.

•The full Chota Char Dham Yatra typically takes 10 to 14 days, depending on pace and mode of transport.
•Most pilgrims allocate 2–3 days for Badrinath itself, including travel, darshan, and visits to nearby sites like Mana village and Tapt Kund.
•The entire circuit can be completed in as few as 8 days if using helicopters for Kedarnath, but road travel and weather delays often extend the schedule.

Plan your visit between late April/May (Akshaya Tritiya) and October/November (Vijayadashami or Bhai Dooj) when Badrinath temple is open; the murti and priests relocate to Joshimath for winter.
Acclimatize properly; Badrinath is at 3,133m, and altitude sickness can occur. Spend a night in Joshimath (1,875m) before proceeding.
Bathe in Tapt Kund, the natural hot sulphur spring, before darshan — it is a traditional purification ritual, but the water is very hot; be cautious.
Carry warm clothing and rain gear even in summer; weather can change suddenly in the mountains.
Visit Mana village (3km beyond Badrinath) for Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa, and Bheem Pul; the Vasudhara Falls trek (9km) is strenuous and may require permits.
Book accommodation and transport well in advance, especially in May–June and September–October; also keep buffer days for roadblocks or landslides.
