The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, about 317 kilometers from Badrinath. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Rishikesh, then continue by road to Badrinath. The drive takes approximately 8-10 hours, depending on road conditions and stops.

Jolly Grant Airport (DED)

The primary gateway for pilgrims flying to Badrinath, offering limited domestic flights from major Indian cities.

•Located about 20 km from Rishikesh and 317 km from Badrinath.
•Regular flights from Delhi (approx. 1 hour) and other cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, and Kolkata (with connections).
•Pre-paid taxis and private cabs are available at the airport; shared cabs to Rishikesh are economical.
•Helicopter services are also available from Dehradun or Sahastradhara helipad to Badrinath, subject to weather and booking.

Alternative: Dehradun Airport (also Jolly Grant)

Often referred to as Dehradun Airport, it serves as the same facility, with the same road connection to Badrinath.

•From the airport, take a taxi to Rishikesh (approx. 30-40 minutes) to join the main road route.
•During peak Char Dham season (May-June), the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation runs special buses from Rishikesh to Badrinath.
•Road conditions can be tricky; plan for frequent stops and possible landslides during monsoon.
•Always check weather and road status before departure, especially in the rainy season.

The nearest major railhead is Rishikesh, approximately 297 kilometers from Badrinath. From Rishikesh, you can take a bus or hire a taxi for the scenic mountain drive. The journey offers a blend of comfort and adventure, with several train options from major cities.

Rishikesh Railway Station (RKSH)

The most convenient railhead for Badrinath, well-connected to Delhi and other parts of India.

•Trains like the Yog Nagari Rishikesh Express and Shatabdi (from Delhi) run regularly; travel time from Delhi is about 5-6 hours.
•From Rishikesh, buses (state-run and private) and taxis are available for the 297 km journey to Badrinath (approx. 9-10 hours).
•The road passes through Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Joshimath, offering stunning views of the Alaknanda River.
•During peak season, advance booking for trains and buses is strongly recommended.

Alternative: Haridwar Railway Station

Haridwar is another major railhead, about 320 km from Badrinath, with excellent connectivity.

•Haridwar is well-served by trains from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and other cities.
•From Haridwar, take a bus or taxi to Rishikesh (approx. 30 km) and then continue to Badrinath.
•The total road journey from Haridwar is around 10-11 hours.
•Many pilgrims combine Haridwar and Rishikesh as a single gateway for the Char Dham Yatra.

The route from Rishikesh via Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Joshimath is long and winding, but the scenic beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas makes it unforgettable. No trekking is required, but the drive demands patience and caution.

Rishikesh to Badrinath (via NH-7)

The most common and well-maintained route, covering about 297 km.

•Drive time: 9-11 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
•Key stops: Devprayag (confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi), Rudraprayag (confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini), and Joshimath (winter seat of Badrinath).
•The road is narrow and winding; be prepared for hairpin bends and occasional landslides.
•Regular bus services (ordinary and deluxe) are operated by Uttarakhand Roadways and private operators from Rishikesh and Haridwar.

Self-Drive or Taxi

For flexibility and comfort, many pilgrims opt for private taxis or self-driven vehicles.

•Taxis are available in Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun; fares are fixed by the tourism department, but negotiate before starting.
•Self-drive is possible, but ensure your vehicle is in good condition and you are experienced with mountain driving.
•Parking in Badrinath is limited; use designated parking areas near the temple or in Joshimath and take a local shuttle.
•During the yatra season, the state transport runs special shuttle services from Joshimath to Badrinath (approx. 45 km).

Practical Tips

•The temple opens only from late April/May (Akshaya Tritiya) to October/November (Vijayadashami or Bhai Dooj); check exact dates before planning.
