Overview

•The Bhimbetka rock shelters are an archaeological site in central India that spans the Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods, as well as the historic period.
•They exhibit the earliest traces of human life in India and evidence of the Stone Age starting at the site in Acheulean times.
•Located in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, about 45 kilometres (28 mi) south-east of Bhopal, this UNESCO World Heritage Site consists of seven hills and over 750 rock shelters distributed over 10 km (6.2 mi).
•At least some of the shelters were inhabited more than 100,000 years ago.
•A visit here offers a profound journey into prehistoric human life, with rock paintings and natural formations that span millennia.

Accommodation

There is no accommodation within the Bhimbetka rock shelters themselves, as it is a protected archaeological site. Most visitors stay in nearby towns such as Obaidullaganj or Bhopal, which offer a range of hotels and guesthouses. For a more immersive experience, some eco-resorts and forest lodges are available in the surrounding Raisen district.

Tips

Visit between October and March when the weather is pleasant for walking and exploring the open-air site.
Wear sturdy, comfortable footwear as you will be walking on uneven rocky terrain across the hills.
Carry sufficient drinking water, snacks, and sun protection; there are limited facilities within the site.
Hire a knowledgeable local guide to understand the context and significance of the rock paintings and shelters.
Respect the archaeological site: do not touch the rock art, and follow all posted rules to help preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Bring a camera but check current photography regulations; some areas may have restrictions to protect the ancient paintings.
