Overview

The Bhimbetka rock shelters, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, span the Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods and offer the earliest traces of human life in India. This archaeological complex comprises seven hills and over 750 rock shelters spread across 10 km, with some shelters inhabited more than 100,000 years ago. Located about 45 kilometres south-east of Bhopal, it provides remarkable evidence of Stone Age culture starting from Acheulean times.
