History

Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, is a city of lakes and greenery with a history that spans from ancient kingdoms to princely rule and modern statehood. Known as the City of Lakes, it flourished around 1707 as the capital of the Bhopal State under the Nawabs, later becoming a princely state under British suzerainty. After India's independence in 1947, Bhopal was one of the last states to accede to the Indian Union, becoming an Indian state on 1 May 1949. Today, it is a major administrative, industrial, and cultural hub, and one of India's greenest cities.

Historical Sites

Upper Lake (Bhojtal)

Taj-ul-Masajid

One of the largest mosques in India, its construction began in the 19th century under the Nawabs of Bhopal and was completed in the 20th century. It is a prominent example of Islamic architecture.

Gohar Mahal

A palace built in 1820 by Qudsia Begum, also known as Gohar Begum. It is a fine example of Hindu-Muslim architectural fusion and reflects the cultural synthesis of Bhopal.

Shaukat Mahal

A palace designed by a French architect in the 19th century, featuring a unique blend of Indo-Islamic and European architectural styles. It is located in the heart of the old city.

Moti Masjid

A mosque built in 1860 by Sikandar Jehan Begum, inspired by the Jama Masjid in Delhi. It is known for its striking white marble facade and is an important religious site.
