History

Chiplun is a historic city in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, serving as a commercial and financial hub of the Konkan region. Located on the Mumbai–Goa highway (NH-66), it has a rich history spanning ancient maritime trade, medieval Islamic and Maratha rule, and modern industrial development.

Chiplun, pronounced [t͡ʃipɭuːɳ], is a city and taluka headquarters in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, India. Situated about 250 km south of Mumbai and 90 km north of Ratnagiri, it lies in the Konkan region on the Mumbai–Goa highway (NH-66). The city has a long history and a strong cultural background, and in recent decades has seen significant industrial development in and around it. It is one of the financial and commercial hubs of Ratnagiri district.
