An East UP hub city built around the Gorakhnath Math monastery, and the usual jumping-off point for Kushinagar and the Sonauli border crossing into Nepal. Named for the Nath-sect saint Guru Gorakhnath, Gorakhpur has grown around the Gorakhnath Math, one of the largest monasteries of the Nath monastic order in North India. The city is also home to Gita Press, one of the world’s largest publishers of Hindu religious texts, and its lakeside Ramgarh Tal is a popular evening spot.
