Overview

Gurugram or Gurgaon, a satellite city in South Haryana, is a major IT and shopping hub of Delhi. Once a mere commuter town, Gurugram now boasts slick office complexes housing companies from Accenture to Xerox, with more shopping malls per square mile than anywhere else in India. However, the city is also one of the victims of Delhi's unprecedented urban sprawl, with poor infrastructure, traffic jams as well as the winter smog.

Historical Timeline

1776

Jharsa paragana passed to Begum Samru in 1776–77 and came under direct British rule in 1836 after her death when her territory was taken over by the British who established a civil lines at Jharsa and a cavalry cantonment at nearby Hiyadatp

1818

In 1818, Bharawas district was disbanded and Gurgaon was made a new district.

1821

In 1821, the Bharaswas cantonment was also moved to Hidayatpur in Gurgaon.
