Plan Your Trip to Haridwar
A starting checklist for planning a Haridwar trip — when to go, how long to stay, and how to get around.
Overview
Most visitors give Haridwar 2 days — enough for Har Ki Pauri, both hilltop temples by cable car, and one evening Ganga Aarti — though a single focused day works if you are continuing on to Rishikesh or the Char Dham. October to March is the most comfortable window; the July-September monsoon brings the heaviest rain and a stronger river current, and the Kanwar Yatra (Shravan month, roughly July-August) brings exceptional crowds worth planning around. Haridwar pairs naturally with Rishikesh, 24 km upstream, as a combined 3-4 day trip.

- •Especially recommended for senior travellers or groups
Budget & Practical Tips
A few essentials for a smoother Haridwar trip.
Book a riverside ghat-side hotel with elevator access
Choose accommodation near Har Ki Pauri or Triveni Ghat that offers ground-floor or elevator-accessible rooms. This reduces walking distance and avoids steep stairs, which is vital for senior mobility and group coordination.
Schedule darshan and aarti visits during off-peak hours
Attend the morning aarti (around 5:30 AM) or the early evening aarti (around 6:00 PM) but arrive 30 minutes early to secure a seated spot. Avoid the crowded 7-9 PM rush, and always use the designated senior citizen queue at Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples.
Carry a small foldable stool or use paid palki services for uphill temples
For Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi, use the ropeway (cable car) if available, but for any walking sections, a lightweight foldable stool lets seniors rest frequently. Alternatively, hire a palki (carried chair) for the entire climb—confirm the price in advance with the group leader.
