Overview

•Puri is a coastal town in the Indian state of Odisha, situated on the shores of the Bay of Bengal.
•It is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites, alongside Badrinath in the north, Dwarka in the west, and Rameshwaram in the south.
•The town is synonymous with the Jagannath Temple, a majestic 12th-century structure built by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Ganga dynasty.
•The temple's towering shikhara (spire) reaches about 65 meters and is crowned with the Nila Chakra, a sacred discus of Vishnu, and a flag that is ceremonially changed every day.
•Unlike other Char Dham temples, the deities here are not conventional stone idols but distinctive wooden, painted forms of Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra.
•Puri is also one of Hinduism's Sapta Puri, the seven holiest cities.

Pilgrimage Sequence

1Begin your Char Dham journey in the east at Puri, where you can seek the darshan of Lord Jagannath and participate in the temple's daily rituals.
2From Puri, travel to the southern Char Dham at Rameshwaram, where you can worship Lord Shiva and take a holy dip in the sacred waters.
3Proceed to the western Char Dham at Dwarka, the ancient kingdom of Lord Krishna, and offer prayers at the Dwarkadhish temple.
4Conclude the Char Dham yatra in the north at Badrinath, nestled in the Himalayas, for the darshan of Lord Vishnu.
5After completing the circuit, many pilgrims return to Puri to offer thanks at the Jagannath Temple, as it is considered auspicious to begin and end the yatra in the east.

Tips

Non-Hindus are traditionally not permitted inside the main Jagannath Temple sanctum. Respect this restriction and view the temple from the outside or from designated viewing points.
Dress modestly and remove your footwear before entering the temple premises. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple.
Plan your visit around the daily rituals, such as the Mangala Aarti (early morning) and the evening aarti, to experience the temple's spiritual atmosphere.
Try the Mahaprasad from the Ananda Bazaar, the temple's kitchen, which is considered sacred. It is available for purchase by all visitors.
If you are visiting during Rath Yatra, book accommodation and transport well in advance, as the town becomes extremely crowded. Also, be prepared for large crowds and follow safety guidelines.
