Plan Your Trip to Puri

A starting checklist for planning a Puri trip.

Overview

Puri, on the Bay of Bengal in Odisha, is best visited between October and March when the weather is pleasant; the monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain, while the Rath Yatra in June or July draws massive crowds. Most travelers spend 2–3 days to explore the Jagannath Temple, Gundicha Temple, and Puri Beach, and to sample Mahaprasad. The town pairs naturally with Chilika Lake (a 1–2 hour drive) for birdwatching and boat rides, and with Konark's Sun Temple (about 35 km away) for a combined heritage circuit. As a Char Dham site, Puri offers a distinct spiritual experience—note that non-Hindus are traditionally not allowed inside the main Jagannath Temple sanctum.

When to Visit

Choose the cool, dry season for comfort, or time your trip around the spectacular Rath Yatra for a once-in-a-lifetime festival experience.

Peak Season (October–March)

Pleasant temperatures (15–30°C) and clear skies make this the best time for sightseeing and beach time.

  • •Book accommodations well in advance, especially around Christmas and New Year.
  • •Early mornings are ideal for sunrise at Puri Beach.

Rath Yatra (June–July)

The grand chariot procession draws millions of devotees; the town transforms into a sea of color and devotion.

  • •Expect extreme crowds and limited lodging—reserve months ahead.
  • •Arrive at least a day early to secure a good viewing spot along the route.
  • •Be prepared for heat and humidity; carry water and sun protection.

Monsoon (June–September)

Heavy rains and rough seas limit beach activities, but the lush green landscape and fewer tourists can appeal to some.

  • •Check weather forecasts and avoid travel during cyclones.
  • •Some temple rituals continue, but outdoor sightseeing may be disrupted.

Festivals & Special Days

Besides Rath Yatra, other festivals like Snana Yatra (bathing festival) and Chandan Yatra offer unique glimpses of temple traditions.

  • •Snana Yatra typically falls in May–June; check the Hindu lunar calendar.
  • •During festivals, dress modestly and follow temple protocols.

Getting Around

Puri is compact and walkable, but auto-rickshaws, cycle rickshaws, and taxis are readily available for longer trips.

Walking & Cycling

The town center, including the Jagannath Temple and beach, is easily explored on foot or by bicycle.

  • •Wear comfortable shoes; temple areas require removing footwear.
  • •Rent a cycle from local shops for a leisurely ride to Gundicha Temple.

Auto-Rickshaws & Cycle Rickshaws

Inexpensive and ubiquitous for short hops; negotiate fares before boarding.

  • •Agree on a price upfront—typical short rides cost ₹20–₹50.
  • •For Gundicha Temple (3 km), an auto-rickshaw ride takes about 10 minutes.

Taxis & Private Cars

Best for day trips to Chilika Lake or Konark; hire through hotels or local agencies.

  • •A full-day taxi for Chilika Lake costs around ₹2,000–₹3,000.
  • •Ensure the driver is familiar with the bird sanctuary areas.

Trains & Buses

Puri railway station connects to major cities; local buses and auto-rickshaws link the station to town.

  • •From the station, take a prepaid auto to your hotel.
  • •For Konark, state buses run frequently from Puri bus stand.

Budget & Practical Tips

Plan for modest costs, respect temple rules, and savor the unique Mahaprasad experience.

Accommodation Costs

Budget guesthouses start at ₹500–₹1,000 per night; mid-range hotels ₹1,500–₹3,000; luxury resorts higher.

  • •Book ahead during festivals and peak season.
  • •Look for hotels near the beach or temple for convenience.

Food & Dining

Try Mahaprasad from the temple (available to all) and local Odia seafood at beach shacks.

  • •Mahaprasad is served in the Ananda Bazaar—ask for a leaf plate.
  • •Avoid non-vegetarian food near the temple area to respect local customs.
  • •Carry bottled water; tap water is not potable.

Temple Etiquette & Restrictions

Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the Jagannath Temple sanctum; dress modestly and remove footwear.

  • •Photography is prohibited inside the temple premises.
  • •Be prepared for queues; arrive early (temple opens at 5 AM).
  • •You can view the temple from the nearby Raghunandan Library rooftop (small fee).

Money & Connectivity

ATMs are available, but carry cash for small vendors; mobile networks work well in town.

  • •Carry small denominations for temple offerings and tips.
  • •Wi-Fi is common in hotels; buy a local SIM if needed.
