Lighthouse Beach

  • Climb the red-and-white striped lighthouse for panoramic views
  • Watch fishermen haul traditional catamarans ashore at dusk
  • Spot dolphins playing offshore during calm morning walks
  • Walk the rocky promenade to nearby Samudra Beach
  • See the working Vizhinjam harbour light from the top
  • Relax on soft sand beside the ancient banyan tree

Travel Tips

  • Carry a foldable walking stick and wear non-slip sandals: The path from the parking area to the lighthouse has a few uneven steps and loose gravel. A walking stick helps with balance, and sturdy, non-slip footwear prevents slips on sandy or damp surfaces.
  • Use the shaded seating near the lighthouse entrance: The main viewing area has limited shade, so head to the benches under the trees by the entrance gate. This spot offers a good view of the beach and a comfortable place to rest without direct sun exposure.
  • Visit during low tide for easy walking: Check the tide timings locally or online before you go. The exposed, firm sand during low tide is much easier and safer for walking, especially for seniors, than the soft, deep sand at high tide.
  • Plan your visit before 10 am or after 4 pm: Midday sun is intense and can cause fatigue or heatstroke. Early mornings are calm for photography, while late afternoons offer cooler breezes and a chance to see the sunset — both are ideal for group pacing.
  • Keep group members together and set a meeting point: The beach is long and can get crowded, making it easy to lose sight of companions. Agree on a fixed meeting point, like the lighthouse ticket counter or the lifeguard tower, and have a mobile phone with each subgroup’s contact saved.

Things to Do

Climb the Vizhinjam Lighthouse for panoramic views

45 minutes

Ascend the 40-meter-tall, red-and-white striped lighthouse, still in operation, for a sweeping view of the Arabian Sea, the crescent-shaped beach below, and the fishing village of Vizhinjam. The spiral staircase is steep but manageable, and the top offers a perfect photo spot at sunset.

SightseeingModerate

Enjoy a Kerala seafood lunch at a beachside shack

1.5 hours

Pick one of the many open-air restaurants right on the sand (like those near the lighthouse steps) and order fresh kingfish, prawns, or squid, grilled or cooked in coconut curry. Most places let you choose your fish from the ice display, and you eat with your feet in the sand.

CultureEasy

Explore the rock pools at the southern end (near the lighthouse base)

1 hour

At the far south of the beach, large black rocks form natural pools that fill with seawater. You can sit here, watch crabs and small fish, and listen to the waves crashing—a quieter alternative to the main swimming area, and a great spot for birdwatching.

Visit the Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour

1 hour

Just a 10-minute walk south of the beach, this working harbour is where you can see colorful wooden boats, daily fish auctions, and women sorting the catch. It’s a raw, authentic glimpse into Kerala’s coastal economy, best visited in the early morning.

Take a sunset catamaran ride along the coast

1 hour

Join a local boatman for a leisurely ride on a traditional wooden catamaran, drifting parallel to the beach as the sun dips below the horizon. You’ll get a unique view of the lighthouse and the cliffside hotels, and often spot flying fish or dolphins in the distance.

Walk the length of Lighthouse Beach at low tide

1.5 hours

Stroll along the firm, golden sand from the southern rocks near the lighthouse to the northern end where the beach meets the rocky promontory. At low tide, you can explore small tidal pools and watch local fishermen hauling in their traditional catamarans.

Frequently Asked Questions

The sea at Lighthouse Beach can have strong currents and sudden deep drops, especially during monsoon months (June to September), so swimming is only advised in the marked safe zones. Lifeguards are present during daylight hours, but always check the flag system and avoid venturing far from shore. For seniors or less confident swimmers, it’s safer to wade or just enjoy the waves from the sand.

Early morning (6 to 8 AM) is ideal for a peaceful walk, soft light, and cooler temperatures, with fewer tourists. Late afternoon (4 to 6 PM) is also good for sunset views, but it gets busier with families and vendors. Avoid midday (11 AM to 3 PM) as the sun is harsh and the sand becomes too hot for comfortable walking.

The beach itself is sandy and flat, but there are no dedicated ramps or wheelchair paths, so walking on loose sand can be tiring. There are a few shaded benches near the lighthouse base and some cafes with basic seating, but public washrooms are limited and not always clean. It’s best to bring a portable stool or walking stick, and plan for short, slow strolls rather than long treks.

The beach is about 2 km from Kovalam’s main bus stop and around 16 km from Thiruvananthapuram railway station. You can hire an auto-rickshaw or a prepaid taxi from the station; auto fares are roughly ₹150-200, and taxis cost around ₹500-600 for the one-way trip. For a group, a taxi is more comfortable, but be prepared for narrow, winding roads and some uphill walking near the lighthouse entrance.

Carry sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, drinking water, and a light towel, as there is no shaded boardwalk along the main beach stretch. There are several small shacks and restaurants just behind the beach serving fresh coconut water, seafood, and South Indian meals, with some offering rooftop seating. For rest, the lighthouse garden has a few benches, and many hotels nearby allow non-guests to use their café for a break if you buy a drink.
