Explore Jahaz Mahal, the Ship Palace
Built between two artificial tanks so that it appears to float, this elongated 15th-century pleasure palace was constructed for Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji's large harem and remains Mandu's most photographed structure, especially from the water's edge at either tank. Climb to the upper terrace for views over both tanks at once.

Watch the sunset from Rani Roopmati's Pavilion
Perched on the southern edge of the plateau, this pavilion was reputedly built so Queen Roopmati could see the Narmada River shimmering in the valley far below, and it remains the best sunset viewpoint in Mandu, looking out over cliffs that drop away to the plains. The neighboring Baz Bahadur's Palace is a short walk downhill.

See Hoshang Shah's Tomb, India's first marble monument
This 15th-century domed tomb is considered the earliest marble structure built in India and is said to have influenced the design of the Taj Mahal, with Shah Jahan reportedly sending architects to study it. The pierced stone screens and proportions reward a slow walk around the exterior.

Walk through Jami Masjid and Ashrafi Mahal
Modeled on the great mosque at Damascus, the Jami Masjid's huge domed prayer hall and courtyard sit next to the ruined Ashrafi Mahal, once a madrasa and later a victory tower, whose collapsed upper stories now give an almost archaeological, half-excavated feel compared to the mosque's intact grandeur.

Visit Baz Bahadur's Palace and the Rewa Kund reservoir
Built by the pleasure-loving Sultan Baz Bahadur, this palace of open courtyards and airy halls sits just below Rani Roopmati's Pavilion, with the small stepped Rewa Kund tank nearby said to have been built to bring Narmada water up to the plateau for the queen. The love story between the two rulers is the folklore that ties both sites together.
