Religious Significance
Palghar holds immense historical and cultural significance. It was part of the ancient Sopara kingdom, a major port and Buddhist center. The region later saw rule by the Silaharas, the Portuguese, the Marathas, and the British. The Portuguese influence is evident in the Bassein Fort (Vasai Fort) and numerous churches. The district is also a stronghold of Warli art, a tribal art form dating back to 2500 BCE. The presence of the Warlis, Kolis, and other tribes adds to its ethnographic importance.
