Reaching the temples involves a strenuous climb of about 3,500 stone steps, though palanquin bearers are available for those unable to walk. The town itself, declared India's first vegetarian city in 2014, offers a serene base for pilgrims.

The nearest airports are Bhavnagar (about 60 km) and Ahmedabad (about 210 km). From either, you can take a taxi or bus to Palitana. Bhavnagar has limited connectivity, so Ahmedabad is the more common entry point for international and domestic travelers.

Bhavnagar Airport (BHU)

The closest airport, with sporadic flights from Mumbai and a few other cities. From the airport, hire a prepaid taxi or take a state transport bus to Palitana.

Palitana has its own railway station (PIT) on a narrow-gauge line, but most pilgrims prefer the broader network at Bhavnagar Terminus. Trains from major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Ahmedabad connect to Bhavnagar, from where you can continue by road.

A small station with limited direct trains from places like Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar. The station is about 2 km from the town center.

•From the station, auto-rickshaws are available to the temple foothills.

Bhavnagar Terminus (BVC)

The main railhead for Palitana, well-connected to major Indian cities. From Bhavnagar, you can take a bus or taxi to Palitana.

Private Taxis & Self-Drive

For flexibility, hiring a taxi or driving your own car is a comfortable option. The roads are in good condition, and signboards guide you to the temple complex.

•Parking is available near the foothill; a nominal fee is charged.
•From Ahmedabad, take the NH47 and then SH6 via Dhandhuka.
•Ensure your vehicle is in good condition; fuel stations are plentiful.

Practical Tips

•Wear comfortable, non-slip footwear; you will be climbing thousands of steps.
•Dress modestly and remove shoes before entering the temples, as per Jain customs.
•Respect the vegetarian nature of the town — no meat, eggs, or fish are sold within municipal limits.
•Carry a small backpack with water, but avoid plastic bottles inside the temple complex.
•Check the temple opening times before you go; they typically close by 1–2 PM.
