Planning Your Visit
Overview
- •Palitana, in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district, is one of Jainism's holiest sites, home to the world's largest cluster of Jain temples—over 900 marble shrines (some counts exceed 3,000) crowning Shatrunjaya Hill.
- •Dedicated primarily to Adinatha (Rishabhanatha), the first Tirthankara, the complex was built and rebuilt over roughly 900 years by generations of wealthy Jain patrons, resulting in interconnected temple clusters called 'tuks.' Pilgrims climb about 3,500–3,800 stone steps over 3.5 km (2–4 hours) to reach the summit, where the main temple to Adinatha stands at the highest point and the smaller Chaumukh temple graces a secondary peak.
Accommodation
Stay overnight in Palitana town, which has a range of budget guesthouses, mid-range hotels, and Jain dharamshalas (pilgrim rest houses) that offer simple, clean rooms—many with vegetarian meal options. Book ahead during major Jain festivals (like Paryushan or Mahavir Jayanti) when demand spikes. Since you cannot stay on the hill, choose lodging close to the base of the steps to make an early start easier.
Tips
- Start your climb at sunrise (around 6:00–6:30 AM) to beat the heat and have enough time before the temples close; the ascent takes 2–4 hours.
- Hire a doli (palanquin) porter service if you cannot climb the steps—porters are available at the base and charge by weight and distance; negotiate the rate beforehand.
- Wear modest, comfortable clothing that covers shoulders and knees as a sign of respect; remove shoes and any leather items before entering the temple complex.
- Carry your own water and light snacks, but note that food stalls and water points exist along the route and at the top—all strictly vegetarian.
- Hire a local guide at the base to explain the history of the tuks and the iconography of the Tirthankaras, enriching your visit.
- Be mindful of the sanctity: avoid loud conversations, photography inside sanctums is often prohibited, and never bring non-vegetarian food, alcohol, or tobacco anywhere on the hill or within the town's vegetarian limits.
