History

Panaji, also spelt Panjim, is the capital city of the tiny state of Goa in India.

Overview

Panaji, also spelt Panjim, is the capital city of the tiny state of Goa in India. It has its own charm, a river flowing along one side of the city, some areas which are low-rise and red-roofed, and even a Latin Quarter at the eastern end of town. Increasingly, it is shaping itself as a centre where cultures (many from around the globe, and from diverse areas of India too) meet and creativity flourishes.

Historical Timeline

1961

Panaji was annexed by India with the rest of Goa and the former Portuguese territories after the Indian annexation of Portuguese India in 1961.

1987

It became a state-capital on Goa's elevation to statehood in 1987 and between 1961 and 1987 it was the capital of the Union Territory of Goa, Daman and Diu.

2000

A new Legislative Assembly complex was inaugurated in March 2000, across the Mandovi River, now full of casinos, in Alto Porvorim.
