Planning Guide

Overview

  • Srisailam, nestled in the Nallamala Hills of Andhra Pradesh on the banks of the Krishna River, is a rare pilgrimage site that is both a Jyotirlinga (Mallikarjuna Swamy) and a Shakti Peetha (Bhramaramba Devi).
  • The temple's architecture, dating largely to the Vijayanagara and Reddy dynasties (14th–16th century), features towering gopurams and intricately carved stone corridors.
  • The journey through the forest road of the Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve—India's largest tiger reserve—offers a scenic yet adventurous prelude to the spiritual experience, with the Srisailam Dam and its vast reservoir adding to the region's grandeur.

Accommodation

Options range from budget lodges and dharmashalas near the temple to mid-range hotels in the main town, with basic amenities. For a quieter stay, the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) runs Haritha hotels, including one near Patalganga, offering views of the Krishna River. Book well in advance during festival seasons like Maha Shivaratri, when lakhs of pilgrims crowd the town.

Tips

  • Start your journey early (around 5–6 AM) to avoid wildlife activity and complete the forest road in daylight; driving after sunset is risky due to animal crossings.
  • Carry a valid ID and obtain the forest entry permit at the checkpost; ensure your vehicle has a spare tire and sufficient fuel, as there are no petrol pumps inside the forest.
  • Pack light but include water, snacks, and a first-aid kit, as eateries are sparse along the forest road and inside the temple town.
  • For a traditional pre-darshan bath, use the Patalganga Ghat via the ropeway (₹100 per person) or the steep 700-step staircase—both lead to the Krishna river; the ropeway is easier for elderly pilgrims.
  • Book accommodation and special darshan tickets online (via APTDC or temple website) at least 2–3 weeks in advance, especially for weekends and festival days.
  • Respect the tiger reserve's rules: do not stop or honk unnecessarily, avoid littering, and refrain from carrying non-biodegradable items—this is a protected habitat.
