Sri Krishna Matha, also known as Krishna Mutt, is the spiritual heart of Udupi, established in the 13th century by the great Vaishnava philosopher Madhvacharya. The temple enshrines a stunning idol of Lord Krishna, originally discovered as a large lump of gopichandana clay, which Madhvacharya miraculously transformed into the divine form. Unique to this temple, the deity is not viewed through a conventional sanctum door but through a nine-holed silver-plated window called the Navagraha Kitiki, symbolically allowing devotees to see the Lord as a child through a cradle. The temple is managed by the eight Mathas (monasteries) founded by Madhvacharya, with each Matha taking turns to conduct worship in a two-month cycle. The daily rituals, including the famous Kanakana Kindi darshan, and the vibrant festivals like Paryaya and Krishna Janmashtami draw pilgrims from across the globe, making it a profound center of devotion and philosophical learning.

Malpe Beach, located about 6 km west of Udupi town, is a wide, sandy expanse along the Arabian Sea, backed by swaying palm groves and the busy Malpe fishing harbour. Known as the gateway to St. Mary's Island, a unique geological formation of columnar basalt rocks, the beach offers boat rides, water sports, and fresh seafood shacks. The harbour bustles with colourful fishing boats, while the beach itself is popular for evening strolls, sunbathing, and watching dramatic sunsets. The nearby Malpe Marine Life Museum and the ancient Anantheshwara Temple add cultural depth, making it a well-rounded coastal destination for pilgrims and leisure travellers alike.

St. Mary's Island, a small uninhabited island in the Arabian Sea near Malpe Beach in Udupi district, Karnataka, is renowned for its distinctive hexagonal basaltic rock columns, a rare geological formation. These columns, formed by the rapid cooling of lava millions of years ago, create a surreal landscape that draws geologists and nature lovers alike. The island is also historically significant as the site where Vasco da Gama is believed to have landed in 1498, erecting a cross to mark the event. Accessible via a 20-30 minute boat ride from Malpe, the island offers serene beaches, clear waters, and a peaceful escape, though swimming is not permitted. Visitors can explore the rocky terrain, relax on the sands, and marvel at the natural symmetry of the columns, making it a must-visit for those seeking unique coastal experiences.
