History
Varanasi, also known as Kashi and Banaras, is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities and the spiritual heart of Hinduism. Situated on the banks of the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, it has been a center of learning, culture, and pilgrimage for over three millennia. Its history spans ancient kingdoms, medieval sultanates, Mughal rule, British colonialism, and modern India, culminating in the recent Kashi Vishwanath Corridor redevelopment. The city embodies the cycle of life and death, with ghats for ritual bathing and cremation, and remains a living testament to faith, resilience, and cultural synthesis.
Overview
Varanasi, a city of timeless sanctity, has flourished on the western bank of the Ganges for more than 3,000 years. Known variously as Kashi ('the luminous') and Banaras, it is revered as one of Hinduism's seven holiest cities (Sapta Puri). Pilgrims come to bathe in the sacred river, perform rituals, and, ideally, to die here, as it is believed to grant moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth). The city's labyrinthine lanes lead to over 80 ghats, ancient temples, and bustling bazaars, while its intellectual and artistic traditions—from Sanskrit scholarship to Banarasi silk and classical music—have enriched Indian civilization. Varanasi is also a site of Buddhist pilgrimage, as nearby Sarnath is where the Buddha delivered his first sermon. Today, the city harmonizes its ancient heritage with modern aspirations, exemplified by the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, which connects the sacred temple to the river.

Historical Sites
Kashi Vishwanath Temple
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva, the temple is the spiritual core of Varanasi. The current structure was built in 1780 by Ahilyabai Holkar, with a gold-plated spire donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1839. The temple is now connected to the ghats via the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor.
Dashashwamedh Ghat
The most prominent ghat on the Ganges, believed to be where Brahma performed the Dasashwamedha sacrifice. It hosts the spectacular nightly Ganga Aarti, a ritual of fire and devotion that draws thousands of pilgrims and tourists.
Sarnath
Located about 10 km from Varanasi, Sarnath is where the Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment. The Dhamek Stupa and the Ashoka Pillar (whose Lion Capital is India's national emblem) mark this sacred site, along with an archaeological museum housing ancient relics.
Banaras Hindu University (BHU)
One of Asia's largest residential universities, founded in 1916. It houses the New Vishwanath Temple, a modern replica of the original, which is open to all Hindus regardless of caste, reflecting the university's inclusive vision.

Pilgrimage History
Varanasi's history as a pilgrimage destination is as ancient as the city itself. Revered in Hindu scriptures as Kashi, the 'luminous city', it is one of the seven holy cities (Sapta Puri) that grant moksha. Hindus believe that dying here breaks the cycle of rebirth, and the cremation ghats of Manikarnika and Harishchandra are considered the most auspicious sites for final rites. The Ganges itself is worshipped as a goddess, and bathing at dawn from the ghats is a purifying ritual. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Shiva, has been a focal point of worship since antiquity, drawing pilgrims from all over India. Over centuries, the city has also been a center for ascetics, scholars, and saints, including Adi Shankaracharya and Ramananda. The Buddhist connection at Sarnath adds another layer, making Varanasi a multi-faith pilgrimage hub. Despite periods of destruction and rebuilding, the city's sacred geography has remained remarkably resilient, and today, with the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, the pilgrimage experience has been enhanced, reaffirming Varanasi's eternal role as a gateway to liberation.
