About Kumarakottam Murugan Temple

Kumarakottam stands between the Ekambareswarar temple and the Kamakshi Amman temple, so that Shiva, Murugan and the goddess together form a Somaskanda grouping across the town — a layout the temple calls unique. Murugan here is Bala Murugan, the child who imprisoned Brahma for forgetting the meaning of Om.

This is where the Kandha Puranam was born. The temple priest Kachiyappa Sivachariyar composed it, and Murugan himself gave him its opening words, "Thigada Chakkara"; the epic was presented in the temple premises. Arunagirinathar sang Thiruppugazh hymns here, and the Lord is said to have guided Pamban Swamigal to the shrine. Murugan receives a honey abhishekam every single day of the year, and a gingelly-oil abhishekam at dawn on Deepavali.
