About Kundrathur Murugan Temple
Kundrathur Murugan Temple crowns a small hill about 28 km south-west of Parrys in Chennai — 8 km west of Pallavaram, 8 km from Poonamallee and 12 km west of Tambaram — and about a kilometre south of the Kundrathur bus stand. Eighty-four steps lead up to the shrine, which the temple credits to the Chola king Kulothunga II. Murugan sits facing north with Valli and Deivanai, and the temple is a favourite place to pray for marriage.
The sanctum has a curious feature: although both consorts are beside him, you can see Murugan with only one of them at a time — Valli from one side, Deivanai from the other. Arunagirinathar sang three Thiruppugazh hymns to the Lord of this hill, and archaeological digs on the hill have turned up evidence of its long history. A Kasi Viswanathar shrine is another highlight.
- Murugan seen with only one consort from each side
- 84 steps up the hill; built under Kulothunga Chola II
- Three Thiruppugazh hymns by Arunagirinathar
- Prayer shrine for marriage
