About Marundeeswarar Temple
Marundeeswarar Temple in Thiruvanmiyur honours Shiva as the god of medicine, who taught the sage Agastya the ailments that trouble people and the herbs that cure them. Sambandar and Appar both sang of it in the 7th century, under Pallava rule, so the shrine is at least 1,300 years old; seven inscriptions on the goddess’s sanctum record gifts from Chola kings, Rajendra I among them.
The name of the place comes from Valmiki, who worshipped here on Markandeya’s advice and found liberation — Thiru-Valmiki-ur. The gods are said to have made the lingam from nectar churned from the ocean of milk, giving Shiva the name Amudheesar; Kamadhenu poured her milk on it, and Brahma, Chandra, Rama and Parthasarathy came to worship. The Thyagaraja festival is the temple’s great event.
