About Parthasarathy Temple

Parthasarathy Temple in Triplicane is one of the 108 Divya Desams, sung by Peyalwar, Thirumazhisai Alwar and others, and is said to have been renovated by a Pallava king. The area’s old name is Brindaranya — the tulasi forest — and Thiru-alli-keni became today’s Triplicane. Close to the Marina, it has long been a resting place for pilgrims coming down from Tirupati to bathe in the sea on eclipse days.

By the Brahmanda Purana, King Sumathi prayed to see the Lord of Tirumala as Arjuna’s charioteer; the sage Atreya brought him this image and installed it by the Vaikhanasa Agama. The main deity, Venkatakrishna, stands with Rukmini, Satyaki, Balarama, Pradyumna and Aniruddha — the Pancha Veerar. The festival image of Parthasarathy, always smiling, still shows the scars of Bhishma’s arrows from the Mahabharata war.

History

Through the centuries

  1. 8th century

An inscription of the Pallava king Dantivarman (779–830) in the sanctum doorway records a daily rice offering — matching Thirumangai Alwar’s verse that a Pallava (Thondaiman) king founded the temple.

  2. 1603–1605

Inscriptions of Vijayanagara’s Venkata I record the consecration of a Thirumazhisai Alwar image and a gift of twenty varahas.

  3. 20th century

The other shrines are renovated, and the Vedavalli Thayar shrine and the 36-pillar mandapam are built.
