About Patteeswaram Dhenupureeswarar Temple

Patteeswaram lies about 8 km south-west of Kumbakonam and is the 23rd of the Thevaram shrines on the south bank of the Cauvery. Kamadhenu, the celestial cow, worshipped Shiva here and was granted the power to give whatever is asked — hence the names Dhenupuri and Dhenupureeswarar. The temple has gopurams on all four sides, a seven-tier rajagopuram, and a Nandi that sits moved aside from the line of the sanctum.

The town was part of Pazhayarai, the Chola second capital from the 7th to the 14th century: Kundavai issued a hospital grant from its palace in 1015, and Rajendra I ruled from here as Mudikonda Cholapuram before building Gangaikonda Cholapuram. The goddess is said to have done penance on one leg here, and all nine planets in the Navagraha shrine face the sun. The temple also recalls how Shiva sent a canopy of pearls to shade Thirugnana Sambandar in the summer heat.
