About Perur Patteeswarar Temple
Perur Patteeswarar Temple, on the Siruvani road at the edge of Coimbatore, is among the best known shrines of the Kongu region. Shiva is worshipped as Patteeswarar, a self-manifest square lingam, with the goddess Pachainayagi. The story goes that Kamadhenu, the wish-granting cow, came to this pipal forest to pray; her calf’s hoof caught in an anthill, and when she struck the mound with her horn to free it, blood flowed and the lingam was found. Devotees still point to the hoof and horn marks on it.
In the Kongu dialect a cattle shed is a patti, which gave the Lord his name. The sanctum is credited to Karikala Chola, the saint Appar visited and sang of it in his Thevaram, Kongu Chola kings added the halls in the 11th–13th centuries, and in the Nayak period Alagadri Nayakar built the richly carved Kanaka Sabha. Shiva is said to have danced here for Brahma, Vishnu, Kali and sage Galava on Panguni Uthiram — which is why Perur is also called Melai Chidambaram.
- Self-manifest square lingam marked by Kamadhenu’s hoof and horn
- Kanaka Sabha, a carved Nayak-era hall for the dancing Shiva
- Panguni Uthiram, the day of Shiva’s dance, is the key festival
- Five sacred waters, among them the Kanchimanadhi river
