About Sriperumbudur Adikesava Perumal Temple

Sriperumbudur Adikesava Perumal Temple, also called the Ramanujar Temple, marks the birthplace of Ramanuja (1017–1137), the great acharya who expounded Vishishtadvaita and is honoured among the foremost teachers of the Sri Vaishnava tradition. Vishnu is worshipped here as Adikesava, with the goddess Ethirajanathavalli, and Ramanuja himself has a shrine as Bhashyakarar, the commentator.

The temple keeps alive one of his most moving stories. When a king meant to punish Ramanuja, his disciple Koorathalvar helped him escape and gave him a white cloth to disguise himself, and paid for it with his own eyes. A festival here recalls that loyalty, when Ramanuja appears dressed in white for Koorathalvar. A gold-plated shrine before Ramanuja’s mandapam was given by the Maharaja of Mysore.
