About Thiruvanthipuram Devanathaswamy Temple
Thiruvanthipuram, a quiet village near Cuddalore, is a Divya Desam of the Nadu Nadu group. Its old name, Thiruvahindrapuram, means the town of Ahindra — Adisesha — who is said to have built it and dug the temple well. The hill beside it is Brahmachalam, where Brahma did penance, and also Aushadhachalam, as part of the herb mountain carried by Hanuman fell here; the Garuda river beside it was brought by Garuda.
The Lord has many names — Devanathan, Achyuthan, Deivanayagan, Adiyavarku Meyyan — and the goddess is Hemabjanayaki, Bhargavi and Sengamalanayaki. The building shows late-Pallava roof work, with inscriptions of Kulothunga Chola from 1070 and Vikrama Chola from 1118–1135. For Vaishnavas the place is tied to Vedanta Desikan, who lived here for many years.
