About Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple occupies most of Srirangam, a river island between the Kaveri and the Kollidam near Tiruchirappalli. It is the first and foremost of the 108 Divya Desams, where Lord Ranganatha is seen reclining on the serpent Adisesha, facing south.

Seven concentric prakarams enclose the sanctum, and the South Rajagopuram — about 236 feet tall — is among the tallest temple towers in Asia. The temple is the home of the Sri Vaishnava tradition of Ramanuja, and its Vaikunta Ekadasi festival in Margazhi (Dec–Jan) is one of the largest in South India.

History & Legend

The temple’s vimanam is said to have risen from the Ocean of Milk in answer to Brahma’s penance — a golden, Om-shaped shrine (the Pranavakara Vimanam). It passed from Brahma to the Sun dynasty at Ayodhya, and Rama gave it to Vibhishana after the war in Lanka. On his way home Vibhishana set it down beside the Chandra Pushkarini on the Kaveri’s bank to finish his rites — and could not lift it again. Ranganatha told him he wished to stay by the Kaveri, and agreed to lie facing south, towards Lanka.

In a later age floods buried the shrine under sand and forest. A Chola king, resting under a tree after a hunt, understood the verse a parrot was reciting, dug where it pointed and found the vimanam again — the Kili (parrot) Chola of the temple chronicles.

Through the centuries

  1. Ancient

Tradition credits Dharma Varma Chola and Kili Chola with the first and second founding of the temple.

  2. 9th century

The earliest of its 644 recorded inscriptions date from Aditya Chola I (871–907).

  3. 1048

A pillar inscription in the Chakrathalwar shrine notes a ruling made by the temple’s governing assembly.

  4. 11th–12th century

Ramanuja (born 1017) reorganises worship and temple administration under the Pancharatra Agama; his system is still followed.

  5. Through the centuries

Chera, Chola, Pandya, Pallava and Nayak kings each restore and enlarge the temple.

  6. c. 1500s

The foundation of the South Rajagopuram is laid under the Vijayanagara empire, but the tower is left unfinished.

  7. 1979–1987

The Jeeyar of Ahobila Mutt has the tower completed with devotees’ donations — started on 20 May 1979 and consecrated on 25 March 1987 at 236 ft and 13 tiers.

  8. 2015

Kumbabhishekam held on 19 November 2015.

The outer two are lived-in streets with the temple chariots; the fifth holds the Thousand Pillared and Sesharayar mandapams and the Thayar shrine; the fourth has Garudalwar and the Chandra and Surya Pushkarinis; the third has the golden flagstaff and the Paramapada Vasal; the innermost has painted ceilings and is closed to visitors.
  • Sesharayar MandapamFifth prakaramFamous for its brackets of warriors on rearing horses spearing tigers and yalis, each cut from a single block.
  • GarudalwarFourth prakaramA seated Garuda about 14 ft tall, facing the sanctum with folded hands.

Customs & Rituals

  • Everything is “big”

The temple is Periya Kovil, the Lord is Periya Perumal and the goddess Periya Piratti; the offerings, the drum, the abhishekam and even the Jeeyar are all called “big”.

  • Dawn Vishwaroopa Seva

The first darshan of the day takes place in the presence of a cow, a horse and an elephant.

  • Holy water by elephant

Every day the temple elephants Andal and Lakshmi walk to the Kollidam and carry back water for the sanctum.

  • Ramanuja’s shrine

Ramanuja’s preserved form is worshipped where he passed away inside the temple. It receives no water abhishekam — instead it is coated with saffron, green camphor and sandal paste twice a year, in Chithirai and Aippasi.

  • Dhanvantri shrine

Visited by those praying for recovery from illness. Thirumanjanam is done from 11 AM to noon on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays (not in Margazhi), for a fee of ₹1,200.

  • Festivals all year

It is said to be the only temple where festivals run almost throughout the year. Andal, Thiruppanazhwar and Bibi Nachiyar are all said to have merged with the Lord here.
